Social Networking for Nonprofits

We recently surveyed a number of nonprofits, NGO’s and tribal governments about social networks used.  We asked our nonprofit accounting users the following question:

What social networks do you actively follow or participate in, and for what purpose?

We found an interesting spread of social networks being used and for varying reasons.  Here were the results for the networks used:

  • Facebook:  59%
  • LinkedIn:  26%
  • Google+:  10%
  • Twitter:  5%

As far as the purpose of their participation in the social networks, most said:

  •  Facebook:  personal reasons, but a handful for news
  • LinkedIn:  professional networking and hiring
  • Google +:  personal and work reasons
  • Twitter:  news and educational reasons

We also found that 13% of nonprofit accounting users weren’t following any at all. How has your organization been using social media? Tell us in the comments.

We use social media to broadcast our latest news and information to our followers keeping them updated on our industry.

We’re actively involved in LinkedIn: keeping up-to-date with the latest group discussions, Google+: adding our followers to circles so we can easily see whats happening, and lastly, Twitter. We use this to communicate with our followers but also to follow the latest hash tags (#) so we know whats trending in our area.
